Paul Runyan Golf Lesson

The Greenside Chip Trick

Old time golf champion Paul Runyan, a well known 2-time PGA Championship winner (1934 and 1938) was well-known for his short game expertise. And despite being one of the shortest hitters of his day, Paul won at least 50 times on the PGA Tour.

Every now again Mr. Runyan would be kind enough to give short game lessons and various golf tips to PGA professional players that would be passed on to their students. One such tip, or best described as a "specialty shot", is referred to as "The Runyan". This is not an official term for this particular golf lesson but it's best to give credit where credit is due.

The Best Scenario For The Runyan Shot

There will invariably be times when you find your golf ball extremely close to the hole, just off the green. The last thing you want to do is putt the ball through a long section of grainy grass fringe. Doing so can invite disaster because of the unpredictable direction that the ball could venture into. The wiry grass can slow down your shot and knock the ball off line.

Another option is to chip the ball through the long grass. However, this can be a daunting task because the club may be knocked off-balance if the grass grabs at it during the swing. When this happens, the face of the club may turn when you try to swing through. Also, the ball may travel too far past the hole if it is located very close to your swing area.

The Runyan Shot

These tough situations can be conquered through practice and confidence with specific short game techniques. This would be the perfect time to utilize Paul Runyan's specialty shot. Here is how you do it:

1. Get into your putting stance and keep your front foot slightly open a bit.
2. Make sure you are standing close to your target line.
3. Now hold the club in a vertical position, as you would a putter. The 7-iron is my personal choice here and works well. The club should be standing up on its toe, with the heel off of the ground.
4. Your grip should be the same as you would grip a putter.
5. Now you want to de-loft the club by positioning the ball in the center of your stance.
6. Swing the club straight back and then through, just like a pendulum, the same as when you are putting. Keep the clubhead low to the ground and try using as much of the shoulders and arms as possible.

The Result

When you hit the ball, contact is made with the toe of the club. The toe causes the swing to slightly deaden the hit. Due to a small amount of loft, the ball will ride the face of the club ever so slightly. This causes some overspin and helps the ball roll forward.

The ball should hop right out of the grass but remain low, as a standard chip shot would. Then it will roll softly towards the hole. Your goal is to have the ball roll for at least 75% to 80% of the shot. The Runyan shot causes the ball to ride up the clubface, spin, and hit the green.

Check Your Golf Grip For More Power

Too many amateur golfers have a weak grip, which encourages the club face staying open through impact resulting in weak shots to the right and even the dreaded banana ball. When you think of free golf tips, one of the simpleist ones is the grip.

When we say a weak grip, for a right-handed golfer, that means the left hand is rotated more to the left, showing only one nuckle. This is not a normal hand position as when you let the arms relax, the left hand is turned over more to the right, which is the stronger grip.

This is the grip of choice if you want more power, distance and the highest chance to hit a draw and not a slice. The right hand can get a little tricky as you also want it to be on the club in a natural way, which is the right hand rotated more to the left .

When you marry the two hands mentioned above, you have a Hogan-type grip. This is a grip where your hands are not fighting each other and causing tension. Because tension robs you of clubhead speed and distance.

Golf tips like these can make a huge difference in your results on the course, and yet many amateurs don't take the time to learn a proper grip.

How to Play Golf For Free on Some of the Worlds Best Courses

Would you like to learn how to play golf for free on some of the worlds best courses? You might find that you can golf free while staying at various types of locations such as hotel chains and suites, beachfront condos, golf resorts and villas and even luxury homes. This of course will depend upon the budget you will be working with, the length of your stay as well as your destination.

There are so many fun and interesting golf courses to enjoy in various locations around the globe. Some of them are themed areas or locations that have great benefits for those who visit their establishments. Some golf packages may include fishing and golfing. Others may feature yoga and meditation classes, others may include beginner golf classes or a nearby golf academy, various courses to match your level of skills, competitions and tournaments as well as the amazing opportunity for visiting other geographical areas, discovering various traditions in cultures and customs.

Do you know that by planning strategically you can get some of your golf privileges free? It is true. Although not every institution will honor such, there are some that will give you a free golfing vacation package free according to specific conditions. Besides, it never hurts to ask.

How do you do get to play golf free on some of the worlds best courses?

Well to begin with you will have to become the group leader of a golfing group of at least 16 or more players in order to qualify. After achieving this task you will begin searching for the best golf packaging companies in order to find those with the most agreeable group rates to match your golf group vacation budget. Once you make contact with the golf packaging company of your choice you should tell them immediately that you are the group leader of your large golfing group of sixteen players or more and that you want to make group course accommodation reservations. However, you will only do so on the condition that your own golfing accommodations of playing and staying are free for you to use.

Remember to keep an eye out for hidden golf related fees such as for the golf carts. Ask if the golf cart fees are included for you and your golfing group. If they are not included in your package, you should insist on having them or find another golf course package. You should also make sure you understand the conditions of any course that may be offered in an upgrade which involves course surcharges. This means taking the time to call the various golf courses to find out about their course conditions and their schedule of maintenance, yourself.

When you want to make the most of your free golfing privileges you should learn all you can about the local market of any area destination. You should also find out what the distance is between your preplanned accommodations and the golf course you plan to play through. Keep in mind while planning your golf vacation that you might get a better deal if you plans are to be made during the summer and winter rather than during spring of fall as these are generally slower. When you are searching for the best options for your golf buddies and yourself, you will need to do some research rather than just picking any old golf package. You will also benefit by reading all the fine print and booking with a knowledgeable and reputable golf related company. You may as well ask for any customer references too. Keep in mind when dealing with hotels you may find that they can be very accommodating about their own business golfing faculties.

Getting to stay and play free golf courses can be loads of fun for you as well as your group. By taking the time to properly plan out your golfing vacation you may find that there are other interests that might be worthwhile while you are visiting a new area or even returning to a favorite location. When you need some downtime from golfing you may be able to spend your extra time visiting the local business market or entertainment offerings such as theaters, museums, shopping, dinning, amusement and water parks or even some exciting night life entertainment. This of course will depend upon the area you chose for your group golfing excursion.

Make the most of learning how to play golf for free on some of the worlds best courses. Imagine yourself and your group of golf players enjoying all that your destination location has to offer. You can be improving your swing techniques during the day and then relaxing in the evening in any manner you chose. You can all have the enjoyable and relaxing golf vacation you have been dreaming of, while making memories that will last you a lifetime.

You should also consider investigating any other type of discount that may be offered by golf related businesses that can enhance your free play and stay accommodations while being a golf group leader. You might find that you can take advantage of other small free golf items such as hats, clothing, drink holders and balls or even holiday discounts if you nose around a bit. Perhaps you may even be able to swing a discount for your airfare when you are the leader of a golf group. Do not be shy, ask questions, make suggestions, but always be thoughtful and courteous. And remember, if you and your golfing group of players leave a long lasting and responsible good impression, you will be welcomed back to any establishment again and again. You just may enjoy playing golf free on some of the best courses whenever you get good and ready to do so. Who knows, if you get really good at it, you may never have to pay for your own golfing accommodations or games again!

5 Golf Tips On Driving Better Off The Tee

#1)  Adjust your setup - Make sure you play the golf ball all the way forward in your stance so that it is directly in line with your left heel.  Your stance should be slightly wider than shoulder width apart.  You want to have a nice solid base which you can turn and coil around.  Also, for the right handed golfer, you want to tilt your spine slightly to the right as this will allow you to swing and hit the golf ball on a slight upswing, launching it high into the air.  This adjustment in your setup will also lead to more distance off the tee.

#2)  Keep Your Lower Body Stable - When you are swinging, the job of the lower body is to act as a base around which your turn and coil your upper body.  This allows you to wind up correctly and will create more power as you swing through the golf ball and release the golf club.

#3)  Keep Your Shoulders Square At Impact - It is a very common swing fault to open your upper body too early in the downswing without giving your arms time to catch up.  Everything needs to come together at impact, so making sure your shoulders stay square through the impact zone will allow you to be more in-sync and hit more solid and consistent golf shots.  Having the shoulders open is even more common with the driver as it is a longer club so you need to allow yourself to be more aware of the timing of your arms and body working together.  It's a slightly longer swing, so you have to stay down and through your shot at impact just a split second longer than when hitting an iron.

#4)  Make Sure The Hands Lead Ahead Slightly At Impact - You want to build up some lag or leverage in your golf swing because this will allow you to hit it farther and strike the golf ball more consistently.  Make sure that you create some wrist angle or wrist set in your backswing and then maintain that angle in your wrists for as long as possible in the downswing.  This will allow you to come into impact with your hands slightly ahead of the golf ball producing a much more solid golf shot.  It is a common fault to release the golf club too early in the downswing where the clubhead gets to the golf ball before the hands do.  Make sure to focus on creating a good angle with your wrists and hold that angle until the last second right as you are hitting the golf ball.

#5)
Eliminate Excess Body Motion For More Consistency- It's common with the driver to want to swing extra hard in order to try and hit the ball farther.  One problem with swinging too hard is your body will probably move too much.  Your head should stay relatively still during your golf swing even with your driver.  You do not want too much lateral movement.  If you shift your weight too much to the right on the backswing, you may be getting your weight outside your right foot.  Make sure when you turn in the backswing, you turn so that your weight shifts to the inside of the right foot.  On the downswing and follow through, make sure to stay balanced and behind the ball slightly, instead of feeling like you are moving forward too far.

Golf Basics - What you Need to Know

The rules in golf are fairly simple if you already know them, however explaining them could take a while. If you are not very familiar with the basics, the first thing you would need to know would be the main objective of the game: you have to hit the ball at the start or at the tee into the hole for every section in the course's 18 sections or 18 holes.

The hole is located on the green, which is a piece of short and well-maintained grass. Once you are already on the green, you need to use your putter, which is the club that has a slab-like end, instead of your other normal clubs.

Every hole has a specified target number of shots to be done from the tee to the hole. This is called the par. For instance, if you are on a par 5 hole, you would need to get the ball from the tee to the hole in five shots or less. If you were able to do it with exactly the number of shots specified, then your score would be a par. If you did it in one less than the par, your score would be a birdie. If you did it in two less than the par, your score would be an eagle. Three below par would be called an albatross and the best score would be a hole in one, which happens if you were able to get the ball from the tee to the hole in one hit.

On the other hand, if you scored one more than the par then that would be a bogey. Two more than the par would be a double bogey. If you have tried for more that 12 shots, then you forfeit the hole. You would then have to move to the next hole.

Eventually, as you go through the game, there would be various hazards that you would have to deal with. If your ball lands on the rough, which is an area on the course that has long grass, you could find it difficult to move on from that area. There could also be trees on the rough of some courses, which could make them harder to get out of. The worst hazards would be the lakes and the ponds, because if you hit the ball into one, it would cost you the shot you took and another shot as a penalty, which would make it harder to reach par.

Can your Golf Ball Improve your Game?

Being able to choose the right golf ball could be just what you need to turn an awful game to a wonderful one. However, it does not mean that you should just trot out and buy the golf ball that Tiger Woods uses to instantly turn you into a world champion. You would still need to choose the golf ball that would work for you.

The three different types of golf balls are: two-piece balls, three-piece balls and high performance balls.

If you wish to improve the distance shots you are making, you would need to use the two-piece golf ball. If you wish to improve your accuracy, then you might opt to use a three-piece golf ball or a high performance golf ball.

For beginners, two-piece golf balls would be more advisable as they are cheaper compared to the other golf balls. Also, two-piece golf balls would be great for those who are slow swingers since these balls have a larger rubber core, which would assure a faster speed.

For golfers whose accuracy is inconsistent, two-piece golf balls would also be the better choice, because three-piece golf balls just would not do if you would be making a couple of inaccurate hits in a game. Also, if you are still working on your precision, high performance balls would not be the best way to go as these balls would be more suitable for the professional golfers who have already mastered their games.

Golf balls are definitely something that you would need to give importance to as you learn more in golf and as you work on your skills to become better st your game. Being equipped with the right type of golf balls that would work to your advantage would definitely improve your score and eventually help you move on to the more competitive playing field.
