Fix Your Golf Slice - Learn the 4 Main Causes of a Golf Slice and How to Fix Them

Does your golf swing more resemble a boomerang being thrown than a golf ball being hit? Are you sick of spending more time in the woods than most animals? If so, then you have found the right place to finally cure your nasty golf slice.

For a right handed player, slicing the golf ball means the ball moves from the left to the right as it flies through the air. It is just the opposite for a left handed golfer. A golf slice is the most common mistake or swing flaw made by amateur golfers throughout the history of the game. The reason the golf slice is so prevalent is primarily because amateurs are attempting to accomplish so many other things with the ball, such as getting the ball airborne, but they are going about it completely the wrong way. The end result is the dreaded golf slice.

The golf swing is one interconnected movement very much like a line of dominoes. Every movement in the golf swing then causes another movement, and then another. This domino effect can work out for the good if you know what you are doing, but for most of us, it ends up in lost balls, lost money, and frustration. So let's try to get to the foundation of why your golf ball is slicing so we can then cure that golf slice once and for all.

There are two basic things that will make the golf ball slice. The first is hitting the ball with an open club face, and the second is cutting across the ball with your club face from the outside of your body moving inward towards your body. These two movements that I have just described are the final dominoes in a long line that will make the ball slice, but they are not what you should necessarily focus on when trying to fix the slice. Unfortunately, that is what many people mistakenly do.

When fixing anything within your golf swing, you can't focus on the final club face impact on the golf ball, although it is important to understand what you are doing wrong. For example, you can't say that in order to fix my golf slice, I need to stop hitting the golf ball with an open club face. You must actually focus on something that you are doing wrong multiple steps back in the chain reaction of the golf swing and let that then fix the slice. Now let's try to figure out what some of the things may be that are causing you to hit that dreaded golf slice.

Primary Cause of the Golf Slice

Most amateurs hit their golf slice because of a combination of four main swing faults. The fist and most common is when amateurs try to get the ball in the air by attempting to scoop the ball up off of the ground rather than hitting down and through on the golf ball and letting the club's loft get the golf ball airborne. The golf ball should always be hit while the club face is still in it's descent. Most people don't know this but a PGA pro's divot actually starts after the golf ball has already been struck. This means that they actually hit down on the ball which is the exact opposite of how most beginners attempt to give the ball loft.

Second Cause of the Golf Slice

The second biggest swing fault which causes most people to slice the golf ball is related to their attempt to hit the ball as far as possible. They end up lunging at the golf ball, thus moving their head forward and ahead of the ball at impact. This can be corrected by standing over the golf ball and addressing it with your head well in front of the golf ball . You will see how this will jam you up at impact and force the golf ball to start and continue right.

Third Cause of the Golf Slice

The third most common reason that people slice the golf ball is that their grip is too weak. What I mean by this is that the lines which are formed when you grip the golf club between your index finger and thumb on each hand are pointed more towards your chin versus having a stronger grip where those lines are pointed at your right shoulder as they should be. If you think about it, your hands have neutral positions. Try this for yourself to understand the concept. Stand up straight and let your hands fall to your side naturally.

What you will find is that the top knuckle side of your hands will basically be facing forward. Now try to turn your hands to the left or right and then when turned relax them again. What happens is that, when relaxed, they return to that neutral position again. This is why when your grip is weak (your left hand is turned more left and your right hand is turned more left), you hit the ball with an open club face. Naturally in those positions your hands will want to open the face through the swing, and having a stronger grip will take care of that problem.

Last Primary Cause of the Golf Slice

Finally the last main reason that people slice the golf ball is that they are swinging from the outside in. This means that you are taking the golf club back outside of your body and then coming back inside on your down swing which will cut across the golf ball causing a nasty slice. Now that we have laid out what some of your faults are that are most likely causing the slice of your golf ball, let's see what we can do about curing that golf slice once and for all by fixing those faults.
